History
Thirroul is a northern suburb of the city of Wollongong, Australia. It is a fairly old town, dating back to when Wollongong was a mere farming settlement. It has a lot of heritage. It hosts the Thirroul Seaside & Arts Festival, in the first weekend of April.

Famous Landmarks
The newest attraction to the northern suburbs is the newly built Sea Cliff Bridge that allows some of the most spectacular views on the coast, feel free to drive along it or if you feel a little athletic take a walk. Another well know place is the D.H.Lawrence park which is situated between Thirroul and McCauley’s beach. He was an English author who once visited Thirroul with his wife in 1922 and whilst staying here wrote “Kangaroo” a novel about Australian fringe politics after the First World War. The famous artist Brett Whitley was also a frequent visitor to Thirroul and passed away from a drug overdose in the Beachside Motel.
Sport
Residents of Thirroul have no excuse not to be fit. There is plenty of activities to undertake. For one there is the beaches the surf is terrific all year round, you can join the Surf Club or swimming club on Friday nights at the local pool. There are plenty of competitive sport teams from the “Butchers” Football club, Northern Suburbs Netball Club. Or if your not into competition sports feel free to do some bush walking along the escarpment or jump on the bike track which heads south through to Wollongong. Relax with tennis, or even some lawn bowls. No matter what you prefer there will something here to cater for you.
Transport
The Wollongong City Gallery is the largest regional art gallery in Australia with a major collection of contemporary Aboriginal &; Illawarra colonial art.
Restaurants & Cafes
Thirroul’s choice of cafés and eating spots has grown within the past 2 years with a large variety of casual restaurants and coffee shops on both the north and south side of the railway. We recommend Samuels Restaurant for a light lunch or dinner, or for the good Italian Feed make your way to Little Italy, above the Ryan’s Hotel. For the relaxing cafés you can’t miss Beans Talk café, Gloria Jeans or Oscars Wild Bookstore, with it’s wide range of books, music and artworks. Relax with a drink and some food on the front terrace at Beaches Hotel and listen to the live bands.
Education
Thirroul is equip with two primary schools, Thirroul Public School and St Michaels Catholic School. There is also a local pre-school. Only minutes away from Thirroul you will find another two high schools, one public and one catholic. With only a 15 – 20 minute drive to Wollongong you have the use of Wollongong Tafe and the University of Wollongong.
